Himself

When he reached out,
she reached back
without hesitation,
because she cared
deeply for him.
Then, like a candle
being snuffed out,
he would shut off–
like he knew
he had her
where he
wanted her.
She finally told him,
“When you find
what it is
you are looking for,
then reach out to me.”
She knew,
he could never
appreciate her
for who she was,
because
he had only found pieces
of himself in
those of us
he had loved–
pieces of himself
that he loved.
When he couldn’t find
those pieces within himself,
he reached out,
and not just to her.
She was no fool.
There were others.
He was missing
himself.
He was looking for
himself.
And, it was time
to stop being
the mirror.
