The Sound Leaving Makes

via Daily Prompt: Sound

He was so exhausted
with inner turmoil,
because he
did not know
how to process
his feelings.
He asked her,
“What do you want?”
With a sideways grin,
she replied,
“I don’t want
to be the one
you cannot forget,
but can justify
living without.
I want to be
the one
who fills you
with so much regret,
because
there is no other
like me.
I want you to look
high and low,
and realize
I am the one
who got away.
But,
I want to be
so far gone
and too busy
loving my life
that I don’t
even care.
I know, the loss
will ultimately
be both of ours.
I want you to know
that we were cut
from the same star.
For I have loved you
for lifetimes–
even as dust
in the night sky.
But, that love
has finally reached
its capacity.
It has gone supernova
and is now
being directed inward,
creating a new universe.
I want you
to take my hand
and memorize it,
because this will be
the last time
you ever touch it.
I want you
to listen to my voice
and memorize it,
because this will be
the last time
you ever hear it.
I want you
to kiss my mouth
like you mean it,
because this will be
the last time
you ever taste me.
I want you
to look into my eyes
and know this will be
the last time
you ever swim in them.
I want you,
but I want me more.”
