Happy Endings

Everybody wants a happy ending,
But, that’s not always life, love.
Sometimes happy endings are
62 years of choice
after 20 years of yelling
and broken dinner plates–
not the Greek-wedding kind, either.
Sometimes happy endings
are wrapped in shards of clay
that cut you,
leaving your heart confused
and your ego bruised.
Sometimes happy endings
are dressed in
dying from old age
with your sparring partner
at your side,
making pieces with your lives
and whispering, “You are my love.”
